Internet Archive

The Internet Archive is a non-profit digital library based in San Francisco, best known for the Wayback Machine and for large collections of books, audio, video, software, and images. Founded by Brewster Kahle, it promotes universal access to knowledge and long-term Digital preservation of cultural material online.

Collections

Besides web crawls, the organisation hosts digitised books (including lending programmes), concert recordings, television news archives, and historical software. It collaborates with libraries, Wikimedia projects, and research partners on crawl campaigns such as End of Term government-web captures.

Role against ephemerality

Studies of Link rot show that many live URLs die within years; archived copies at the Internet Archive often remain the only public evidence that a page existed. That role makes the institution central to Cultural memory of the early and contemporary web—while also exposing it to copyright litigation and blocking by sites that refuse crawlers.
