Permanence in a cultural and archival sense means the capacity of a record, name, monument, or practice to remain available and meaningful across long spans of time. Absolute permanence is rare; institutions instead pursue persistence through redundancy, migration, law, and social commitment.

Domains[edit]

  • Archival permanence — media longevity, fixity, format planning (Digital preservation)
  • Identifier permanence — stable names such as DOIs (Persistent identifier)
  • Cultural permanence — canons, rituals, and Cultural memory that outlast single platforms
  • Commercial "forever" branding — e.g. the U.S. Forever stamp, which promises postage validity rather than metaphysical eternity
